READING COMPREHENSION Gr4-6

Reading comprehension is the ability to process written text, understand its meaning, and connect it to what you already know.

Key Levels of Comprehension
  • Literal: Understanding basic facts, characters, and settings directly stated on the page.
  • Interpretive: Reading between the lines to infer meanings, find main ideas, and understand an author's purpose.
  • Critical: Fact-checking and evaluating the information.
  • Creative: Making judgments or forming personal opinions based on the text.
Effective Strategies
  • Predict: Guess what will happen next in the story or article.
  • Visualize: Create a mental image or film in your head of the events.
  • Question: Ask who, what, why, or how while reading to stay engaged.
  • Clarify: Reread confusing parts aloud to fix misunderstandings.
